Holding Furnace with Sidewell / Vortex

Reverberatory holding furnace with a small sidewell for returns and light scrap

Overview

What it is and where it works

A reverberatory furnace that holds the main bath at temperature for casting, with a small external sidewell where a stirring system creates a vortex. Returns and light scrap are charged into the sidewell, away from the burner flame, and pulled under the metal surface quickly. Chip feeding, drying and preheating is a separate installation (see the Chip and Swarf Pretreatment Line).

Bath capacity / melt rate Up to 100 t bath and up to 12 t/h melt rate (documented upper values) Sized to your plant: tell us your target output.
Charge
Fine-grade loads: chips, turnings, shavings, UBC
Why a sidewell
Charge goes in away from direct flame and is submerged fast, to cut melt loss
Vortex drive
Electromechanical or electromagnetic stirring; static or tilting versions
In your plant

Where It Is Used

  • Remelting machining chips from die casting and CNC plants
  • Secondary smelters processing UBC and light gauge scrap
  • Holding and alloying before casting

  1. Main bath capacity (t) and holding temperature
  2. Chip or light scrap volume per day and its condition (dry, oily)
  3. Alloy family being melted
  4. Fuel type, and whether you want electromechanical or electromagnetic stirring
  5. Chip pretreatment already in place (centrifuge, dryer)
  6. Available floor space around the furnace

Buyer questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do chips need to be dried before the sidewell?

Yes. Wet or oily chips are a serious explosion hazard in any melting furnace and the oil increases melt loss, so a centrifuge and dryer upstream is standard practice.

Can the same furnace hold metal for casting?

Yes, the main chamber works as a holding and alloying bath while the sidewell takes the fine charge, which is the point of the design.
