Ingot Mold Coating

Boron nitride release coating that protects ingot molds and eases ingot release

Overview

What it is and where it works

Coating applied to ingot and sow molds to protect the mold surface from molten aluminium and make the ingot release cleanly. The industry standard is a water-based boron nitride (BN) suspension with a binder, brushed or sprayed on preheated molds and dried by residual heat. Coating type affects cooling time as well as release.

Type
Water-based boron nitride (BN) suspension with binder, the industry standard
Application
Preheat clean molds up to about 100 °C; brush or spray; thin coats of about 50 to 150 µm
Dilution
Some grades are diluted with water at 1:2 to 1:3 if needed

Buyer questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the coating slow down solidification?

Insulating release agents can lengthen cooling time, so the coating is chosen to balance release against cycle time.

Can I apply it on a cold mold?

Preheating the mold helps the coating dry; wet coating must never meet molten metal.
