Refractory Castables and Bricks

High alumina castable refractories for furnace hearths and walls

Overview

What it is and where it works

Low-cement castables, precast shapes and bricks for lining aluminium melting and holding furnaces, ladles and launders. Metal-contact zones (hearth, lower sidewall, belly band) need aluminium-resistant grades with non-wetting additives to limit penetration and corundum growth. We source the grade for each zone of your furnace.

Type
Low-cement castables (cast, pumped or vibrocast) and precast shapes
Non-wetting additives
Barium, boron or fluoride; they lose effectiveness above about 927 °C (1,700 °F)
Critical zones
Hearth, lower sidewall and belly band: highest metal contact and mechanical wear
Binder
Colloidal silica, for maximum strength and ease of application

  • Holding and dosing furnaces
  • Launders, troughs and ladles
  • Precast burner blocks and door jambs

Buyer questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes corundum build-up?

Reaction between aluminium and the refractory, accelerated by high temperature and by Mg and Zn in the alloy. Aluminium-resistant grades and keeping bath temperature under control limit it.

Can I use the same castable in the roof and the hearth?

Not usually. Metal-contact zones need non-wetting grades, while the roof and upper walls face alkali attack and thermal cycling instead.
