Spark Spectrometer (OES)

Spark OES to check alloy composition at every heat, from a chill-cast disc

Overview

What it is and where it works

A spark optical emission spectrometer that burns a small spot on a chill-cast sample and reads the light emitted by each element to give the alloy composition in minutes. Foundries take samples from the liquid metal at several stages, so the melter can correct the charge before casting and certify each heat.

Method standard
EN 14726 covers spark OES analysis of aluminium and its alloys
Elements
Si, Fe, Cu, Mn, Mg, Cr, Ni, Zn, Ti and others with suitable calibration
Sample
Mainly chill-cast solid samples taken from the melt
In your plant

Where It Is Used

  • Composition check before tapping or casting
  • Alloy correction in the melting and holding furnace
  • Heat certificates for ingot and casting customers
  • Incoming ingot and master alloy control

Buyer questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can it measure trace and modifier elements like Sr, Na or P?

Many spark OES units can, depending on configuration and calibration; tell us which elements and limits you control so the instrument is specified for them.

What sample do I need?

The standard method mainly uses a chill-cast solid sample taken from the liquid metal, prepared on the analysis face before sparking.
