Chip and Swarf Pretreatment Line

Crusher, screen, dryer, preheating and feeder to prepare aluminium chips before melting

Overview

What it is and where it works

A line that prepares machining chips and swarf for remelting: a crusher breaks long and nested chips, a screen and magnetic separator remove oversize and iron, and a rotary dryer drives off oil and coolant at a temperature below melting, and a preheater and feeder charge the chips into the furnace. Dry chips are safer to charge and lose less metal in the furnace or go on to briquetting.

Safety
Moisture-laden chips are a major explosion hazard in melting furnaces
Dryer duty
Volatilises oil and coolant without melting the chips, to cut melt loss
Dryer type
Rotating drum with flights that shower the chips through the hot gas

Where It Is Used

  • Die casting and machining plants recycling their own swarf
  • Feeding a sidewell or vortex furnace with dry chips
  • Preparing chips for briquetting
  • Recovering coolant for reuse

Buyer questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a centrifuge enough or do I need a dryer?

A centrifuge removes most of the free coolant; a dryer is needed to drive off the remaining oil and water before the furnace. Residual values depend on your chips and should be confirmed by a test.

Can the dryer treat painted or coated scrap?

Chip dryers are meant for uncoated material; coated scrap such as UBC needs a decoating (delacquering) unit, which is a different process.
