Dross Skimming Arm

Mechanised skimming arm to remove dross from the furnace bath

Overview

What it is and where it works

A mechanised arm or skimming machine that removes dross from the surface of the bath through the furnace door and drops it into a dross pan. It takes operators out of the hot zone in front of the furnace, shortens the time the door stays open and gives a repeatable stroke. Used on reverberatory melting and holding furnaces and at casting stations.

Safety and heat loss
Keeps people out of the furnace front and shortens door-open time
Controlled stroke
Measuring metal level lets the tool depth be set to limit metal pick-up
In your plant

Where It Is Used

  • Skimming reverberatory melting furnaces
  • Cleaning holding furnaces before casting
  • Stirring and dry cleaning of the bath
  • Skimming at ingot casting stations

Buyer questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Will mechanical skimming damage the refractory?

It can if the stroke is not controlled; designs with force control and metal level measurement are used to avoid breaking the lining.

Does it reduce metal lost in the dross?

Setting the tool depth from the measured metal level limits how much metal is pulled out with the dross. Any saving depends on your current practice.
