Thermocouples and Protection Tubes

Thermocouples and protection tubes for molten aluminium temperature control

Overview

What it is and where it works

Thermocouples and protection tubes for measuring molten aluminium in melting and holding furnaces, ladles and launders. The element (often type K) sits inside a tube of cast iron or a technical ceramic, where silicon nitride and sialon give the best life to price ratio, which must resist aluminium attack and thermal shock. We sell both full assemblies and tubes only, to your length and fitting.

Element types
K, N, J, E, T, R, S, B available; simplex, duplex or triplex
Tube materials
Silicon nitride and sialon (best life to price ratio); cast iron, clay-bonded silicon carbide and alumina-mullite on request
Cast iron tubes
Coated cast iron tubes tend to dissolve in aluminium and need frequent recoating, which is why ceramics replaced them in many plants

Buyer questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I buy only the protection tube?

Yes. Send the outside and inside diameter, length and fitting so the tube matches your existing element.

Why do my cast iron tubes fail so fast?

Molten aluminium dissolves iron, so cast iron tubes rely on a coating that must be renewed. Ceramic tubes avoid this but need care against thermal and mechanical shock.
