Master Alloys

Al-Ti-B grain refiner, Al-Sr modifier and Al-Mn, Al-Fe hardeners

Overview

What it is and where it works

Aluminium-based master alloys for adjusting melt chemistry and structure: Al-Ti-B grain refiner, Al-Sr eutectic modifier for Al-Si alloys, and Al-Mn and Al-Fe hardeners for composition correction. Supplied as rod, waffle or ingot. We source to your composition spec and ask for a certificate of analysis per lot.

AlTi5B1
Ti 4.5 to 5.5 %, B 0.9 to 1.5 %, balance Al; supplied as waffle or rod
Grain refining
TiB2 and Al3Ti particles act as nucleation sites for aluminium grains
Al-10Sr
Used to modify eutectic silicon in Al-Si alloys; one study on 319 alloy added 8 to 96 ppm Sr
In your plant

Where It Is Used

  • Grain refining of casting and wrought alloys
  • Eutectic Si modification in A356, 319 and similar Al-Si alloys
  • Mn and Fe correction in secondary alloys

Buyer questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add grain refiner and Sr modifier together?

It is done, but boron can interact with strontium and weaken modification. Addition order and levels should be set for your alloy.

Do you supply a certificate per lot?

Yes, we request a certificate of analysis for each lot and check it against your spec.
