Fluxes and Demagging Agents

Cover, cleaning, drossing and demagging fluxes for aluminium melts

Overview

What it is and where it works

Salt-based fluxes added to molten aluminium to cover the bath, clean out oxides, separate metal from dross and clean furnace walls, plus demagging agents that lower magnesium content in Al-Si alloys and silicon metal. Formulation depends on alloy, temperature, scrap quality and addition method. We source by function and form (powder, granules or tablets).

Flux functions
Covering, cleaning, drossing, refining, wall cleaning
Demagger action
Sulfur or chlorine compounds react with Mg to form MgS or MgCl2 that separate from the melt; cryolite (Na3AlF6) used as flux in some grades
Packaging
Powder, granules or tablets; 25 to 50 kg bags or big bags
In your plant

Where It Is Used

  • Melting and holding furnaces in foundries and die casters
  • Secondary smelting of scrap and UBC
  • Mg reduction in Al-Si alloys and silicon metal (Si ≥ 98 %)
  • Wall cleaning to remove oxide build-up

Buyer questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between cover and drossing flux?

Cover flux forms a layer that protects the bath from oxidation; drossing flux helps metal drain out of the dross so you skim less aluminium.

Are there emission concerns with demagging?

Yes. Chlorine-based demagging can release chlorine and aluminium chloride in the off-gas, so extraction and local regulations must be checked.
